All about … The HUS

What the HUS is

The Homerton Union of Students is similar to what other colleges call a JCR, but also includes PGCE students. We are defined by our Constitution, which is updated to meet the needs of students.

We provide services that include: representation in the university and beyond, welfare advice and support, entertainment, publications and the support of college societies.

The HUS Office

Find out more about the HUS office on the bottom of Queens wing, open 10-2 and 5-7.

There is an elected president (currently a sabbical officer) and an elected Executive Committee (HUS Exec) who take responsibility for carrying out the aims and activites of the HUS. HUS Exec members sit on committees of the college to ensure that students concerns are taken into consideration in decision making. The Exec is be resposible for the day to day running of the HUS and is accountable to the student body via Open Meetings.

These are the principle form of governance with the HUS and shall allow every member of HUS the opportunity to have their say about the policies of the union and the issues that concern them.

The Constitution

The constitution is available as a web page and a Microsoft Word Document.

The Co-opted Team

This is a brilliant way for freshers to get involved with the HUS, as well as anybody that want to push specific issues in the college.
The Co-opted student members have responsibility for specific campaigning and representation.
Co-opted positions run Michaelmas to Michaelmas and the Support team hold interviews for appointments with recommendations presented to an Open Meeting pending ratification by a simple majority.

The team aims to have at least one Campaign or event a year. The co-opted team had an internations student's officer, a disabilities officer, environmental officers, and oppertunities officers.

CUSU

Cambridge University Student Union is the student union for all Cambridge students, with a budget made up from contributions from all the colleges. They run campaigns and student services, similar to the HUS but bigger, so if we haven't got what you want, take a look!

Our President Luke Shepherdand Vice President External (Bec Wilkinson) attend CUSU council regularly to ensure our student body is represented, so if you want CUSU related help or representation these are you people. There are also CUSU Open Meetings, which are open to all students.
